"The Future of Manufacturing" at the Night with a Futurist : January 24, 2008

Manufacturing in America has changed dramatically over the past decades, a period marked by deepening globalization, the emergence of China, India and Southeast Asia as major manufacturing bases, technological advances, and the "dot.com" boom and bust.

As the US continues to transition from the industrial age to the knowledge economy, what does that mean for companies and people involved in manufacturing? What does that mean to us as consumers?

Historically, manufacturing has been considered the base of the US economy. Does manufacturing have a future in America? What is happening in Colorado? How can we quantify and analyze the effect on a local level? What do the trends and data around manufacturing lead us to conclude?

Some things are crystal-clear: 1.) ...businesses must do everything right on the micro-level, to be as competitive as possible on the global playing field. 2.) ...it is possible to do everything right on the micro-level and still fail due to macro-policy decisions. 3.) ..too many of the survivors of the last five years of off-shoring still have their eyes on the "tops of their shoes", with a shallow understanding of the long-term implications that will involve a loss of the skills and talent base, and revenue streams on both a local and national level.

Join us as we learn about the Future of Manufacturing and the many ways it will be affecting our lives.

David Anderson is a business strategist and turnaround specialist with more than 30 years of success leading organizations through transitions, with experience in all phases of enterprise formation and development. Dave has demonstrated results in manufacturing, marketing, financial control, policy, and governance initiatives. He has a raised capital, led acquisitions and divestitures, start-ups and shut-downs, completed foreclosure purchases and led businesses through Chapter 11 to solvency. He is presently an independent consultant working with manufacturing firms in revitalization engagements, including operations, marketing and innovation.

Dave's passion is manufacturing, which he believes is a critical wealth-creation element in our economic system. He leads The Manufacturing Task Force, operating out of Colorado Springs, and is on the Board of Directors for The Coalition for a Prosperous America, conducting economic education through Town Hall meetings focused on revitalization in tradable goods production. While acknowledging the challenges presented by outsourcing and offshore operations, Dave believes that careful nurturing and management of intellectual property can provide smaller domestic enterprise with competitive advantage. He believes that there are as many opportunities as ever to be rewarded for innovation, and he seeks to create macro- and micro-level results.

Dave was born in Flint, Michigan. He grew up around the auto industry in Detroit. Afterwards, he spent fifteen years with PPG Industries, in a variety of domestic and international financial and operating roles. As a second career, he built an electronics assembly business from one location with fourteen people to six locations with 800 people. Dave's undergraduate degree is in economics and his masters is in business administration; both degrees are from Harvard.

Please join us for pizza and beer on Tuesday September 18 as we kickoff our new-year of professional development meetings with a tour of the Bristol Brewing Company, a local favorite in Colorado Springs

In June of 1994, Bristol Brewing Company settled comfortably in the lap of Pikes Peak and began hand-brewing flavorful, one-of-a-kind ales for the people of Colorado. Their mission was to make beer that called to mind three things: quality, purity, and sanity. That's why they make their ales using only natural ingredients. You will find them on draught and in bottles at fabulous bars restaurants and retail throughout Colorado.

During the tour, you will be able to experience the operation up close, ask questions of the brewers, and later (if you wish) sample some of the outstanding products produced by this favorite Colorado Springs microbrewer.

Registration is limited to the first 45 people who register. There will be three tours of 15 people. Please indicate at registration your favorite pizza topping if you have a preference. .

Space is limited so please register early.
